RENÉ HERSE Demontable
First of the folding bicycles
Herse bicycles are admired for their perfection and lovingly crafted details. The Demontable model featured here (number 6861) was no different. It aimed to be a luxury bicycle that could be taken apart and was, therefore, infinitely mobile.
Displayed flatpacked in the boot of a car at the Paris cycling exhibition in the early 1960s, the Demontable was one of the first generation of folding bicycles. Its reputation grew massively through its championing by a doctor, Dr. Clifford Graves, in the USA .Through this transatlantic promotion, the Demontable made it out of the Levalloise suburbs in Paris, and into the world. With Americans packing the neat Demontable to take travelling, they were able, ironically, to see Europe from the seat of their own bike. The BIKE FRIDAY New World Tourist (page 170) followed on from this idea nearly forty years later.
