BIRIA Unplugged Tm-Design
Craftsmanship has its price
You could find beauty in the mud with the designer Biria Unplugged TM-Design mountain bike. Despite it having a body to marvel at, however, its performance was less attractive. Everything here was made of carbon and constructed at mindboggling expense. The wheels, for example, were only attached on one hub side, but because of the shape of the frame and the spokes the forces were perfectly aligned. The suspension, along with the prohibitive cost of production, were overlooked, however, and only around twenty-seven bicycles were actually produced. Of these, more than half of them were assembled to make complete bikes with the rest auctioned off unbuilt.
Another obstacle to success was a price tag that ranged from 14,000 to 22,000 DM – at a time when other mountain bikes cost between 3,000 and 7,000 DM . Even the 24-carat hard gold plating on the chain of the top model made no difference (and could only partially hide the fact that the frame is particularly weak when riding out of the saddle).
